world wide web?

When did we do away with having to have www. as part of a web address?

    It was a looooooooooong time ago (like 10 years ago?) because I remember telling my cousin the web address of something and trying to correct him when he left the www off and he said "oh, you don't need that. Just the http://"

    Granted, I still type it in most of the time--10+ years later!!
